Brighton is famous for its seaside amusements and fortune-tellers, and
Badstock Productons celebrates this heritage with an evening themed
around ‘fortune’ in a unique live fortune-telling penny arcade.

Small groups of people (up to six) will be ushered in to a small venue
themed around an ancient out-of-season arcade.
Inside they will find the archana and signage of old seaside
amusements, wonky experimental fairground music, and three human size
fortune-telling penny arcade machines. In each machine will be a
performer re-enacting a classic amusement: The Laughing
Fortune-Telling Musical Clowns; The Graveyard Scene; and the Gypsy
Palm-Reading Machine. The White Night Penny Arcade will create an
out-of time space filled with awe and wonder.

The project is produced by Badstock Productions, a recently formed
Brighton based arts production company who have created live art /
music and puppetry performances at the Basement for The Twilight Club
and The Basement Bordello.

White Night takes place during Fabrica’s autumn exhibition Chameleon an interactive, digital art installation by Australian artist Tina Gonsalves.

Chameleon explores ‘emotional contagion’ (ie how the emotions of one person affect another). For White Night, come and take part in Chance Encounters a series of extreme drawing activities alongside the exhibition which are speedy, fun and challenging.

6pm – Face to Face – Based in our temporary café. Drawing a portrait of your companion across the tablecloth.

7pm and throughout the night – Remote View – Using SMS, participants (who’ve signed up) will be sent a prompt word which they have to draw where they are with any available medium on any available surface (e.g. dust on a windscreen, food, steam on a mirror, lipstick, etc.). Participants take a picture and text it to Fabrica’s online gallery.

9pm – Emotional Rollercoaster – Using a selection of prompt words (undisclosed to the participants) and working with a life model, up to 10 visitors at a time draw a specific emotion on a pre-made face template. Discussions about which emotion informs which expression will be part of the activity, plus the opportunity to access anatomy books and other material (including the exhibition) about the physiology of facial expression. Individual contributions will come together as one piece – a crowd of faces showing a multitude of facial expressions, from ecstasy to distress.

11pm – Luck of the Draw – Visitors will be invited to draw other visitors as they interact with the work and the changing video images. This activity builds on previous ‘drawing to film’ events that we have been devising alongside the exhibition programme over the past two and a half years.

To celebrate Brighton’s White Night Festival on October 24th the Prescription Art Gallery will open its doors from 6pm until 8am the following morning and boast a fill program of Fortune-based events.

A Wheel of Fortune will take place in conjunction with local artist Pinky, where various prizes can be won with a spin of Pinky’s technicolour wheel.

Meanwhile an Urban Igloo will be erected utilising disused For Sale signs and inside local Tarot Card reader Euan Sey will predict the fortunes of attendees.

Parisian street art maestros Shaka and Nosbe will also be flown over to create live pieces through the night, before a spectacular auction takes place with proceeds going to fortunate local arts projects.

With three free gigs also scheduled across three floors, a full bar and films shown in the back garden, it will be a White Night like no other. Even better, entry will be free throughout the night.
