How to download and install Microsoft Office XP


Files that are required

The software

Microsoft Office XP was known in beta stage as Office 10 but is also known as Office 2002. This suite of Microsoft Office products is distributed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows platform. This suite is the successor and predecessor of Microsoft Office 2003. You can also recognize it by its codename, ‘Office 10’. It was released in the USA in March 2001. However, it made its debut in Europe on August 4, 2001. The ‘Mainstream Support’ phase for Office XP ended 11 July 2006. That was the date Windows 98/Me were removed from support. Extended support ended on 12 July 2011. The tools within Office XP were assigned the title of “2002”, even if the suffix is “XP”. For example, Word was not called Word XP, but Word 2002 instead.

The final clippy

Microsoft Office XP’s marketing campaign included the elimination of Clippy (and other Office Assistants) as a default option. Microsoft knew they were very unpopular and unused in users’ lives. These features weren’t completely removed until the 2007 version.

Office XP & Windows XP

Microsoft Office XP came out the same year Windows XP. Despite these similarities, Office XP works with Windows XP. However, it is also compatible with Windows NT 4.0. Windows 98 SE and Windows 2000. Windows Me will not be compatible until the latest suite. It maintains a certain compatibility also with Windows Vista but has no compatibility with Windows 7. It is not compatible for Windows 95 (the last compatible suite of Windows 95 is Office 2000).

Microsoft Office XP System Prerequisites

Office XP will work on Windows 98SE 98SE Me, NT 4.0, Service Pack 6 and later, 2000, XP, and XP.

RAM (RAM)

• Windows XP: Requires 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM for the operating system, plus an additional 8MB of RAM for each Office program (e.g., Word) running simultaneously
• Windows 2000 Professional: Requires 64MB of RAM for the operating system, plus an additional 8MB of RAM for each Office program (e.g., Word) running simultaneously
• Windows Me and Windows NT 4.0 require 32MB RAM to run the operating system. Each Office program (e.g. Word) must be running simultaneously requires an additional 8MB RAM
• Windows 98 or 98SE: Requires 24MB of RAM for the operating system, plus an additional 8MB of RAM for each Office program (e.g., Word) running simultaneously

Hard disk space

Different configurations will require different amounts of hard drive space. Custom installation choices will determine what space is required. Here are the minimum hard drive requirements for Office XP suites.

• Office XP Standard: 210MB available hard drive space
• Office XP Professional and Professional special Edition: 245MB hard drive space available
• An additional 115MB is required on the hard disk where the operating system is installed. System Files Upgrade will not work for users without Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows Me.

Display

Office XP Professional will require a Super VGA (801×600) or better resolution monitor with 256 colours.

CD-ROM drive

You need a CD-ROM drive to install Office XP.

Requirements for speech recognition features

The following information is required for Office XP to recognize speech (available only for US English or Japanese)

• Pentium II 400MHz and higher processor
• 128MB or more of RAM
• A close-talk microphone
• An audio output device
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or later
